The standfirst is the part above the main body of content, underneath the heading, that should provide you with a two-second digest of the piece plus the writer or authorsa names).

Frequently the standfirst is the first ever to be written; its work is to inform the reader who wrote the piece and (very briefly) what it is about. The headline often follows (even though can sometimes by written last) and the mix of the two provide the designer a notion of what type of photo to search for to show the part.
