Unprecedented economic progress in Western Australia implies that as much as 17,800 extra skilled workers will soon be desperately needed every year for the next 10 years, according to a study introduced today by education and training minister Mark McGowan. Several of those skilled workers should result from Australia immigration.

The Beyond the Resources Boom research was commissioned by the State Training Board (STB), and examines Western Australia's economic growth and the difficulties faced by the state's workforce.

Skill shortages are set to remain a feature of the labour market, the report concludes, due to the power of the aging workforce and the economy. STB chairman Keith Spence said the demand will be met through the development of local training initiatives, skilled immigration from international and interstate, and a combination of general citizenry growth.

Among the top performing professions, with regards to expected annual average employment growth between 2016 and 2006, are advanced mining and construction workers, plumbers, structural construction tradespersons, and mining, construction and related labourers. Need for careers in the mining and construction industries is quite large and a recession is considered impossible.

Several occupations are on the Australia Skilled Occupation List and the Australia MODL (Migration Occupations in Demand List), which allows people obtaining Australian immigration to additional things.

Financial projections modelled by the statement show there's unlikely to be described as a boom-bust situation in the short to medium term.
