When we walk into the field of online romance it can seem like we've slipped into another universe altogether, where we no longer communicate with humans but with mystery beings who solely have a very virtual presence.

But we aren't. We're talking to real people and social manners and etiquette, including from the dating kind, don't (or at least shouldn't) differ so greatly from the real world. Except that we do not have to worry (yet) about who's going to foot the bill. It's just a couple having a chat, understanding each other to see where things will go. That isn't so scary now, could it be?

As much as I hate to state it according to contemporary heterosexual dating rules men, generally, should still take the lead. It's just the way in which things roll. So It may be the case that the few internet dating tips for men go a long way, and when you feel like you need some then you've come to the right place!

1) Show initiative As with real life if you want someone, show it. Avoid outrageous gestures and unwarranted declarations of affection but through giving attention, showing interest and making that extra special effort. Don't leave it a time to reply to messages and don't be dismissive in your response. We all know that 'I've been busy at work' actually translates to 'I just couldn't be bothered'.

2) Time it right Once you have moved past the 'how's it going?' stage and decided you'd like to take things one step further help make your move and get to satisfy up. Get it done in good time; don't leave it too long or interest wanes and also the ship will sail. Remember internet dating should be used like a platform right into a real relationship, less a substitute for it.

3) Make it personal Not all people are the same. Take the time to become familiar with your target and find out who they may be. Don't just lump someone right into a category based on their sex, age, origin, occupation etc. etc. It bugs, and it will enable you to get nowhere.

4) Make it simple When you are planning your date ensure that it stays straightforward - asking someone you haven't even met to take a mini-break to Paris won't win any points. A drink is okay, dinner possibly. Or maybe even a simple walk along the river. Honestly, that's what is needed.

5) Make your choice, and stick to it Shop around online by all means, but be subtle about it. Ice-breaker type messages are fine to begin with but once you decide who to go for start tailoring your approach accordingly (see 'keep it personal' above!). Dating in the early stages needn't be exclusive but it should be considerate.

These online dating tips for males are intended to help have an online relationship on track. But most importantly be genuine, be respectful and be yourself; that's always the best place to start.
