In order to operate a limousine, most states require chauffeurs to undergo a process of coaching and testing before they can be issued the appropriate licensing to operate independently as a chauffeur. This process varies from state to state, but in nearly all of them, the candidate has to go through additional measures outside of what's essential to obtain a standard license.

Training: Where To Get It

To become in a position to properly maneuver a bigger vehicle, just like a limousine, your average driver will need to have additional training. Fortunately, there are schools through the country which are able to provide hands-on training for those who wish to become chauffeurs. In many states, candidates have a number of options; including vocational schools, chauffeur training schools, and even courses provided by local limousine rental companies.

The Classes

The classes you will need to take depend on which state you really want to obtain licensed in. Most states need a basic defensive driving course, but many add to that by requiring chauffeur specific courses and first aid courses. If you are going for a course via a local limousine rental company, they may also insist upon a training course that concentrates on the high level of etiquette and attire chauffeurs are required to follow along with.

Testing

The tests a chauffeur candidate undergoes will be based once more with their state and also the requirements of his or her employer. Classes will each include their own tests and trials that must be passed to do the program to satisfaction. Most states will require a basic driving exam plus a written test for that license itself. If you have done the background work that you need to, these tests will pose little difficulty. However, to the lay person who doesn't have the correct training, these tests may be impossible, so be certain you've undergone the proper steps just before testing.

Licensing

Once you have passed all of the required tests and completed the necessary courses, you will be able to receive your chauffeur's license. Many states require that commercial drivers like chauffeurs be re-evaluated following a certain time period. This is usually many years after your initial licensing, also it serves as a safeguard to help keep unsafe chauffeurs off the street. A lot of companies require their chauffeurs undergo more frequent evaluations and re-training compared to state to make sure that they only have the best chauffeurs on staff.
